Learning about the Peruvian culture while offering your services as volunteers

Report to the volunteer

Room and Board

Our volunteers have the option to stay with a host family or to live in a small apartment with other volunteers. Our program highly

encourages the host family stay, as we believe this is the best way to get to know the language and culture of Peru. We have had great luck with our families, many of which will be hosting another volunteer this summer. It is possible to place more than one volunteer with the same family. The volunteers will receive 3 meals/day for 7 days/week.

Transportation to volunteer work sites

We offer transportation to and from your work site. We want to ensure the safety of our volunteers and will organize either

transportation on a public bus or the service of a private taxi, depending upon the distance to the work site.  Each volunteer will be responsible for transportation to and from destinations which are not part of our program’s scheduled activities.

What do you need to know before your travels to Peru?

Health and Vaccinations

Trujillo is located on the coast of Peru and is normally free from epidemics and tropical diseases. However, for prevention purposes, we advise that all volunteers research the recommended

vaccinations for their time of travel.

It is also important that each volunteer consider purchasing travel insurance for their time in Peru. This insurance should include medical coverage in case of an emergency. A few common companies are: travelguard.com and travelinsure.com

Also we recommend avoiding certain foods, such as raw fish or rare meats, during your stay. You should also avoid drinking tap water, unless it has been treated or boiled. Only bottled water is recommended.

Climate and Clothing

Trujillo’s average annual temperature is 19C (66F). It is known as "the city of eternal spring." For now, however, our program occurs in

the month of June, which is the start of winter in Trujillo. Normally temperatures stay between 10-14 degrees Celsius (50-60 F). However, in June 2007, the temperatures were especially cold, with temperatures of as low as 5 degrees C (40F). It is advised to bring clothing suitable for any of these temperatures. If you have any personal travel plans to visit Macchu Pichu or any other mountainous region of Peru, be aware that the temperatures are even lower in these areas, down to -5C (25F). Those that wish to visit the jungle regions of Peru will encounter a pleasant climate (25C/77F) without rain.

Trujillo is a growing city and crime and theft are present in some areas. We recommend that the volunteers leave technological devices, computers, and other items of extreme value at home. Those valuable items carried, such as cameras, should be carried with caution and used in such a way so as to not attract attention. The large majority of crimes in Trujillo involve theft. Violence and the use of weapons is not common.
Volunteers should always be accompanied when withdrawing money from ATMs and should use precaution when traveling by taxi cab. Only taxis from established, reputable companies should be used.
